Burnt Cove Market was started by Thomas Bray and his parents Basil and Muriel Bray in June of 1961. Vernon Seile bought the store in September, 1971. When Vernon bought the store, it was a small general store with basic groceries ,a gas pump and a small furniture store in the back Vernon has ran the store ever since. Burnt Cove has been updated and added on to several times over the last 38 years. The major additions were in 1988, 1995, and 2003. In that time BCM has evolved in to a 10,000 square foot full sized supermarket serving the needs of the residents of Deer Isle and Stonington.

In 1972 the Galley was built to serve the needs of Deer Isle citizens after their store was destroyed by fire. The original store was built in the harbor but a newer up to date store was built in 1996 in North Deer Isle across from the high school.

In 1995 V&S Variety was built to serve the variety needs of the island. The store boasts a wide range of items ranging from cards, yard goods, house wares, small appliances cloths and everyday hardware. After the islands pharmacy closed in 2003 leaving islanders having to travel 25 miles to Blue Hill for their prescriptions, V&S Pharmacy was added to V&S Variety to serve the pharmacy needs of the island.

For the last 38 years Vern & Sandra and over 60 employees have been serving the needs of our friends and neighbors.
